An 80ft tall Christmas tree was reduced to ash on New Year's Eve.

The tree had been standing proud in the Russian town of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk but burst into flames during New Year's Eve festivities.

Thousands of people stood and stared as the tree burned down, leaving nothing but its metal frame behind.

Music continued to play as authorities ordered people to keep clear of the flames. There were no reported injuries and it looks like everyone was happy to carry on partying into the night.

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the tree was gone.

Obviously, people in the crowd filmed the whole thing and these videos have been going viral.

Some superstitions say that burning a Christmas tree will help to protect a place from evil spirits, so maybe the citizens of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk can think about that as a positive way of looking at this event!
